Returning Property & Possessives

In this lesson you practice **returning lost items**, **whose**, and **possessive adjectives** (my, your …) vs **possessive pronouns** (mine, yours …).

• property — returning lost items — Don't mention it.
• whose = belonging to whom?
• my/your/her + noun vs mine/yours/hers alone
• I wonder whose it is. (not who's)
• Is this bag yours?

**property** = something that belongs to someone.

• Excuse me. I think you forgot something.
• I did?
• Isn't this jacket yours?
• Oh, you're right. It is. That's so nice of you.
• Don't mention it.

• Whose car is this?
• Whose book / chair / house / table is this?
• Whose jacket is this?
• Who do you want to meet? (person — not possession)

**Possessive adjectives** need a noun: my, your, his, her, its, our, their. **Possessive pronouns** stand alone: mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs.

• my → mine | your → yours | our → ours
• his → his | her → hers | their → theirs | its → its

• That's my car. → That's mine. / That car is mine.
• This is your book. → This is yours. / This book is yours.
• This is our house. → This is ours. / This house is ours.
• This is his shirt. / This shirt is his.
• This is her dress. → This is hers.
• This is my jacket. / This jacket is mine.
• These are our shoes. → These are ours. / These shoes are ours.

• Your dinner was great. Yours was great too.
• Your shirt is beautiful. Yours is beautiful too.
• Is this yours? / Is this your shirt?
• Is this theirs? (their car / their book)
• Is this her dress? → Is this hers?

• A: Hey, look what I found under the table.
• B: What?
• A: A shopping bag from the emporium. It's full of clothes.
• B: No kidding. I wonder whose it is.
• A: Maybe it belongs to that woman paying at the cashier.
• B: You're right. Excuse me, is this bag yours? It was under our table.
• C: Yes, it is. Thanks so much. That's so kind of you.
• B: No problem.
